My dear Dad & all
Just a few lines to wish you many happy returns, how many can you reckon up now Dad? must be close on 53 - & still looking young as ever eh! Yesterday I sent a wire wishing you many happy returns & to tell you that I had won the Military medal Cross, the telegram apart from the information contained will give you pleaseure & will be quite a surprise. The great charm about the decoration is that I was recommended by the Infantry, not by my own O.C. Yesterday I walked along to the officer (Col Paterson) who pushed the thing thro & thanked him, he seemed awfully pleased. I am the first engineer reinforcement officer in this division to receive recognition, you see they recommended me before - by "they" I mean my own major - but he told me that I hadn't a hope because there were older officers who had not
