long wished to see, sentries guard all approaches but he did not stop us. I had expected him to but all he did was to salute so in we went, its like any other French town - darned ugly, but the strange solitude is sad & depressing. Fritz must have simply discharged hails of steel into it for there are marks into the top of the highest factory chimbneys, the only living forms we saw were 2 sappers & 4 military policemen. A river skirts the town & the only life a few water fowls, the barges are desolate & sad, & water logged. Goldsmith wrote some good stuff about a deserted hamlet its a pity he handed in his checks before cruising round this part of the world.
There's nothing doing I've just made supper, Cocoa & toast tres bon.
