My dear Florrie

We are just waiting for a chap to ge to bed then we are going to fire a Fritz verey light into his tent, what! what!  He woke us up last night just to have a yarn  we'll repeat the performance tonight, the fuse is all ready & as soon as he heaps himself into bed, well - ah! ah! we'll give him the shock of his life, this war is an awful business. We expect to be in the line again tomorrow, that is I rejoin my company then.  Yesterday I enjoyed a cruise round the country, it was recently captured & was jolly interesting, its bonser to roam round old Fritzies trenches, there are lots of amusing things, heaps of souvenirs but they are no use to us, we can't carry them about & I don't think they ever smelt higher, talk about "high game" it doesn't get a look in. This recent battlefield is extremely beautiful, "dinkum", it is lovely & standing there I found it almost impossible to conceive of its association with the scenes of war, the crops, little villages with their ruined church towers, the cliffs & ridges the other side of the river all sing to me of peace.
