My dear Mother Father & Sister

We are having a jolly old time, this gas school has been a good spell & on the whole interesting.  Of course we have sniffed all Fritzes gases etc & juggled with names like this - Trichlormethylchloroformate, it looks fine & healthy doesn't it, next time I feel inclined to swear it will come in handy, gas enters a lot into this war & some of it has a smell which doesn't smell like any other smell smells.​

They have hung up a parcel from you in England, it contains tobacco, they wouldn't deliver it to Uncle Joseph because it was "declared to contain tobacco", they wanted to chg. duty, so it might be a good scheme to send parcels straight to my unit, "10th Fld. Company, Australian Engineers, France".  Nothing more is required, no c/o any body or c/o G.P.O. or anything, just the above plain statement.

By the time I get back to my unit 10 days will have lapsed, so I look forward to finding a letter mail, letters keep the wheels moving.
