Brightlingsea

My dear Mother Father & Sister
This morning we saw in the distance another air raid, our notice was first attracted by the sound of the guns. I only saw 2 planes and the bursting of shrapnel, tomorrow the papers will give greater details, fortunately Brightlingsea has not received their attentions. Dame Rumour has it that London has again been visited, a good number of people during the last raid were injured by our own shrapnel, the pieces of shell have to fall somewhere.
Lately we have played chess a good deal on the mess, mine has been with varying luck, it is an infinitely better game than cards. With regard to the latter I don't remember handling a pack since I left home, can't afford too you know.
Harold Whitworth wrote me a few days ago, a jolly good letter from somewhere in the centre of England, he is brother to Iris Whitworth - Korumburra.
My constant job at this present is that of orderly officer. I am awaiting instructions to "go over" - Havre will be my home for the first few days over there. If you get a letter 150 Seddon St Raetihi - it will mean that I am 150 miles south of Calais - "twigg!"
