Dear Malcolm,
After months of the real old Gippsland weather, we are having some nice days, but really this has been the worst six months we have had for many years. The roads are in a dreadful condition, even I hate driving about, still with it all I know its not half as bad as you must have it where you are now.
Received your post card dated 3.7.17 written on the eve of your departure for the front, so now you, I know, must be in the thick of the fighting. We were wondering if you were in the battle that we are now reading about in the papers. We know our accounts are not reliable, but there is some truth in what we read.
In Harold's last letters he mentioned having met you, so you would be able

There are sundry other things I should remember. (Had my photo taken last Sunday, but it turned out a peak, no wonder, considering the day) but I won't bore you any longer.
