made a reconnaisance of a bit of country around two battered farmhouses. Fritz dropped some Minnies a couple of hundred yds away, the bits of steel sang over head & fell around us, then to cap all our own machine guns put a few round us "silly cows". The country was water logged & sodden but we finished off the job & hopped into the nearest trench. Whilst waiting for the parties we sat & had a little to eat but old Fritz & his machine guns made us look for a bit of cover. Having an appointment with an officer I left my sergeant - who promptly lost himself - although a skilled bushman & roamed around the shell holes for 1½ hours, its no joke I've been lost myself - & picked up the oficer who with a small party were resting under a bit of cover with him. I roamed around. Fritz would drop his Verry lights between us & over lines - he is awfully timely - with each light we would become transfixed untill the flare had gone out & then move on, speaking in whispers & moving as quietly
