Dear Malcolm

After about three weeks continual hot weather we are ending up 1917 with a nice cool day. During the hot spell everything got very dry and withered, it took me all my time to keep the plants about the house supplied with plenty of water. I guess your days have been just the reverse. According to the papers the snow and rain are giving you all a most trying time.

We have had a quiet Xmas just one visitor an old friend of Fathers. Do you remember this night three or fours years ago, when you and the boys blackened our faces with burnt corks? I was just reminding Mother of how you washed her face when she was trying to get the black off. I'm thinking that we'll all be in bed tonight long before the clock strikes 12 or at any rate I'm hoping that
