to build a couple of dug outs in the middle of "nowhere" & miles away from anywhere, a portion of the excavation had been completed & our chaps soon had the rest out whilst I dug out the quantities of timber & iron etc.

The days have become bitter cold, the ground is like iron & as slippy as you can possibly desire. The frost crystals cling to the plants & trees all day long, touch a branch & you receive a white shower, the frost is dry & crisp & does not wet ones clothes. I wandered round an area in the long grass, all yesterday afternoon without becoming the least bit wet. Ice covers all the boots & shell holes it is about 2" thick now but is treacherous. I shot into one hole up to the middle yesterday - now I didn't laugh either, gad it was cold. We were about 4 miles away from camp.

 There's one thing which gets me & its this, they ought to give the Germans this country & apologise for it at the same time
