My dear Mr Stanley
It is some time since we heard from you last. We all hope that you are quite safe & well. I meant to write to you a week or so ago but being in a very depressed humour I did not want to communicate to you with dull thoughts. We had just received news that were distressing to all of us. My uncle was killed in action on the 15th of April. No one who knew him failed to love him, whether men women or children. He was good, kind & jolly to all alike. My poor grandmother is broken hearted. She has such a lot of trials, always in anguish for her four sons serving the call of their King & Country - I thank God for having spared him through near all the battles during nearly four years & allowing him the time to
