men had been warned. We saw the Lizard Light about 7.30 pm. I stood in the heavy wind& it felt fine to be so close to England again. "Lives there a man with soul so dead who to himself oft has not said, this is my own my own my native land". I could hardly express my emotions. After almost 14 years willing excile on the frontiers of our mighty Empire I see again the lights of old England, great search lights were playing thro the sky the Lizard Light was flashing its welcome message across the ocean & I am grateful to have come in safely over so many thousand miles of ocean. Yesterday wreckage & a corpse with a life belt floated past a grim reminder of our danger - one can hardly realize the awfullness of submarine warfare untill you are actually in the game. We were in it but I was not afraid fully confident that a great Hand of Love is on the helm.
Tonight the 11th my thoughts are with the folks at home. I did not regret not seeing you, it is better not to have done so, you live amidst quiet scenes whereas I am compelled to wander thro dangers innumerable. My humble prayer is that I may receive strength to pass unflinching thro them, & lying in my bunk my mind ran thro that beautiful prayer in the regulation books "O Thou who rulest the waves of the sea & has ordained it to be an highway for the nations preserve in Thy gracious keeping all those who journey therein, be mindful of them.
