the design myself & it is being made in a little dugout within sound of the guns, the sapper quite enjoys the job & it will look tip top, the little brass plate is a bit of shell case from an 18 pounder shell, intend to emboss "MOTHER" on it tomorrow.

Yesterday I walked about 3 miles over the hill to look up May Hamiltons brother,   had the good fortune to find him & with me he walked back to camp for dinner, we had it in my dug out, my batman was waiter for the occasion. Hamilton is a decent sort of a chap & we enjoyed a good yarn & a smoke. I gave him one of the tins of Havelock from my last parcel, to the biscuits butter & cheese we also did justice they came in very handy. The night was fine so I walked part of the way back with him, except for the booming of the guns it would be impossible to realize that a war was on everything seemed at rest.

Today I walked a portion of the way out to the lines, old Fritz was very quiet, from a mine crater I saw the church steeple & towers of buildings in a town miles behind the lines, the atmosphere was clear
