which was exceedingly funny. Everyone was doing their best to frighten the mules & they were going everywhere. A very small mule won it.
18th
Left the beach this morning for a new camp on the railway line from Rafa to Shellal. We were not altogether sorry to leave the beach as though we had had a good months rest we were beginning to get a bit tired of it.
One never seems to be content in the Army & we do not like to get stuck in one place for any length of time & yet we don't like the actual move.
Our new camp is on an open plain the soil of which is a sandy loam & is very quickly churned up by the horses hoofs.
Prior to our occupation in April the country was under crop & heavily grassed, but now all vistage of crop etc is gone & the top few inches of surface soil has been churned into fine dust.
A strong wind blows in from the sea every afternoon after dinner & when the horses go to water they raise clouds of dust which spreads all
