we had passed it. It is a very barren looking place with a population of 4,500 who do a small trade in aloes, cochineal, etc.
An educational scheme is starting today with such subjects as lower maths, English, Bookkeeping & perhaps a limited number of others. I am down for bookkeeping, to pass the time away & agriculture too if there are enough to form a class.
Quite a number of chaps have jobs on board - in cook-houses etc, to keep them occupied & fill in time. It does get monotomous on board & I get tired of reading & cannot settle my mind on it for any length of time.
Passed the Laccadive Islands quite clossely on Sunday morning & got into Colombo at tea time on following day.
We have been taking in water & coal all last night & today & won't be leaving until early tomorrow.
