the Heads & gradually got weigh on. The wharf and its cheering crowd with waving hankerchiefs, got smaller & smaller as we drew away until we finally lost sight of the wharf round a bend. There were many sad hearts that day, although there was not a tear to be seen. It made one think of what we were leaving & appreciate as we never had done before perhaps the good old place we were leaving. Of the men on the boat that day there were a great number who were not to see Sydney again & before many months were passed we were scattered all over Egypt, some having already found graves in the desert. We crossed the heads at about 2pm & when outside made a big swing southwards for Melbourne. We all stayed on deck to see the last of Sydney & when the Lighthouse on Southhead had faded away in the distance we went down below to
