orchards. I have never yet seen oranges so prolific as in this locality & we no longer buy them as we can have them for the taking.
There are thousands of troops billeted in Jaffa which would be very comfortable over the winter.
This quite a treat to see European women again with their nice white clear skins & decent clothing which makes a pleasant contrast with the native women.
The Europeans are mostly Jews & some are Germans there being a big German colony only a few miles north of Jaffa.
There are some nice buildings in the town & the streets are very clean, being cobbled & the footpaths asphalted.
Went about 5 miles beyond the town & halted until sunset as we could not go the remaining 3 miles into our position until after dark. We got into position about 9 pm & turned in. The last 5 miles was through very heavy sand & our horses were absolutely done.
