On the rim of the vertical wheel is an endless chain of buckets. As the level wheel is turned the pegs on it interlace with those on the vertical wheel (like cogs) & so turn it. This type is generally used in wells etc for raising the water.

(3) Still another method is to get a cylinder about 8' long with a screw through it on the system of a corkscrew & turned by a handle at the top. One end rests in the water & the other empties into a furrow on top of the bank. These are very portable but slow.

The crops most in evidence at present are maize, sugar cane & some cotton. Saw some sheep with long tails & the wool of a dark brown colour. I should not think that the wool is of very good quality.

Cotton seems to be the main crop but as it is out of season at present have not seen any.
