won some hundreds.
There is not much duty on board except Guards & fatigues. We don't do the guard but get fatigue every 3 days which is not bad.
There is plenty of room on board much more than we first thought. Our troop deck extends the entire length of the ship being just under the main deck, well lit & well ventilated. We sleep up on the main deck but are not allowed up on the boat deck, it being reserved for officers.
Tuesday 10th
Owing to a case of smallpox breaking out everyone on board had to be vacinated today. The Nurses & orderlies nursing the case have to be isolated. He will probably be put ashore at Colombo.
Yesterday evening saw the North Star very low down on the horizon. In a few days I expect it will disappear altogether & the Southern Cross becomes visible.
Sighted the Island of Socotra this morning 11th at 0900 but it was nearly 3 oclock before
