the back. Crabs also are very numerous along the banks of the river & I have seen them as much as 8" long.
Sept 19th Winter Campaign starts.
At 0400 this morning we started on the winter campaign. There was an intense bombardment from about 400 guns at least lasting an hour & lifting at various intervals. The first objectives were quickly gained & prisoners came over in hundreds. Have not yet any idea as to our haul of prisoners & guns but would be inclined to put it at about 2,000 prisoners & 40 guns.
Our aircraft played a great part in this day's work, especially in artillery cooperation which resulted in all hun batteries being quickly silenced or put out of action.
Our bombing machines have been going backwards & forwards all day but not a hun machine have we seen, our air supremacy is absolutely over whelming.
Our position tonight is about 5 miles in front of the position we occupied this morning. We moved forward at about 11 am.
