The Turks evacuated Gaza during the night of the 6th & got most of his stuff away. He left some thousands of rounds of ammunition both small arms & shells which he could not get away. If he had stayed in Gaza a day longer he would have been cut off which would have meant some thousands of men & guns surrendering. At Scheria [Sheria] we captured intact a Turkish hospital.
As we have been exceedingly short of water during the last few days I went over to Sheria wells last night (7th) with one of the Signallers taking about a dozen water bottles between us. I did not know where Scheria [Sheria] was as I had not seen the place in daylight & so had to trust myself to the Tommy & coming home we got lost completely. About midnight we struck a field hospital & stayed there until daylight when we found ourselves only ½ a mile away from the battery.
