May 26th
The River Auja has been put in bounds now for swimming & so we go down whenever we get the chance. As we cannot go together because one must always be at the stn during the day, we have an afternoon off in turn. The river is only half an hours walk from here. The river is a narrow swift running stream, almost too strong to swim against & not very deep, except in places. It is quite a treat to be able to get a decent swim.
June 3rd
Have since learned that the Auja River has its source in some underground springs & an[d] underground river which emerges at an old castle about 3 miles away. This accounts for it running so fast.
For the last couple of weeks there has been a plague of locusts here (Eastern plague locust) there being thousands of them & as a result of their ravages the herbage is dying off. They are about 1ΒΌ" long - 2", some having very short wings others having
