deck. The well deck was considerably lower than the focastle & centre of the ship & as it was bounded on the other sides by the sides of the ship it thus gets its name, also because the hold goes down through the centre of it. Amid ships we had the use the hurricane decks extending from the well deck to the aft hatch & 2nd class quarters a distance of about 75 yards nearly on both sides of the ship. To get onto this deck one had to go up a comma[?]ion way to the boat deck (1st class passengers only allowed here) along it for 7 or 8 yards & then down a flight of steps onto the hurricane deck. Later on we had a guard at top of the steps to prevent any loitering while going from the hurricane to the well deck & vice versa. The Mooltan had already had one escape from a Submarine in the Meditteranean
