On top of the hill are 2 German Krupp 15 cm (6") coast defence guns (1898 pattern) which are manned by our gunners now.
The town looks well from a distance with its white houses & red tiled roofs rising on the hill side & boasts two or three fine big buildings.
Today (10th) ascended Mt Carmel to see the Lighthouse & Monastery of Elijah which we were not allowed inside as there is a guard on it in the absence of the monks. A splendid view is obtained from the Lighthouse of the town, the Bay of Acre, & the town of Acre in the distance.
Also went out to see the 5.9" coast defence Krupp guns about 2 miles along the top of the mountains, only one is in working order, the other being in course of erection. The gun weighs about 25 tons & has a range of 17,000 metres. It is also absolutely intact except for the dial sight which the Germans no doubt took away with them. It fires armour piercing shells.
Today 11th went through Haifa on way to River Makupta, 2 miles beyond the town. We tried to do some fishing
