At the back of the Citadel are the quarries from which the stone necessary to build the place was taken.
28th Had a game of football today with a team from Moascar, against the 4th Aus Camel Regt. Scores 8 - 8. I scored for our side & next day was so stiff & sore that I could hardly walk - due to lack of condition.
Feb 6th Went up to the Barrage last Sunday. This is a big dam built across a junction of the Nile about 15 miles above Cairo. The wall across the delta is about ½ mile long, has sluice gates throughout its length & a few big towers at intervals.
The two branches are respectively 500 & 600 yards long with about 130 arches in all. Its object is the same as the big Aswan Dam but until a couple of years ago was not a success.
