to the hills or any of the Environs of the city. Had to be back on the ship by 5 pm but did not sail until about 9 pm. It took us 4 days to go round to Fremantle with rough seas & head winds all the way. Quite a lot of the chaps were sick but I was not so affected. Once we passed Cape Leewin the weather moderated & the remainder of the journey to Fremantle was through comparatively calm water. The town lies about half a mile inside the Breakwater at the entrance to the Swan River. A mile or so out from the Breakwater is Rottnest Island, which is used both as a pleasure resort & as an internment camp for German prisoners of war. As we only got in just before sundown & were to leave again at midnight we only had a few hours leave ashore. Would liked to have gone up the river to Perth but time would not permit.
