the bombardment of 1881. The walls of them were very solidly made & were as much as 7' thick in places but they would last no time against modern H.E. [High Explosive] shells.
Went to the skating rink one afternoon. It was the first time that I had ever been on skates & in the first 5 minutes or so, I had about 12 busters. I began to improve however after a while.
24th
Went out to see the Catacombs this morning. These have only been excavated for the past 18 years. The lower catacombs were flooded from soakage from a lake near by.
Went out to Nouza gardens the same afternoon with my mate & 2 Aus Sisters who were down in Alex on leave. They were very nice indeed & it was a pleasure to meet & talk to some Australians girls again. One of them was engaged to a young Officer who used to be in our Regiment & has 3 brothers in it.
I was one of these the Major who recommended me for the M.M.
