once every 3 or 4 days. We used to be awakened every morning about 5 am by the hasears crying "washee deck Johny" & if we did not move it would result in a wetting. For amusement we used to have Boxing Contests during the afternoon & concerts at night sometimes.
About 2 days out from Fremantle a gloom was cast over the whole ship by the death of a young Westralian who had only come on board at Fremantle. His death was caused by Haemohage of the Brain as the result of over excertion in a boxing contest. He died within an hour of the contest. We buried him at sea next morning about breakfast time. The ship was stopped & lay rolling quietly on the swell while we stood at attention round the messtables as the body was lowered over the side.
