then we have had a lot more chaps turn out to practice. We have not got much combination or condition yet but as the men are very keen now we should soon have a fine team. I am secretary & skipper, & am quite satisfied as I reckon we have the makings of an excellent team.

Had intended going on 7 days leave to Damascus, Beyrout [Beirut] etc but now that the wet season has started properly I will have to postpone it, probably altogether.

18th

Yesterday 2 mates & myself left Ludd on the 0720 officers train for Haifa. It had rained slightly overnight & was very threatening. The line to Haifa is a broad gauge one now, running along the sea coast when past Zimmerin [Tzimmerim] in some places being only about 20 yds from the waters edge.

At Haifa, where it was raining still, the line runs on an esplanade on water edge, right round Bay into Stn. Arrived Haifa at 1020 & immediately got into a train on the narrow gauge 3'6"
