are excellent & are easily kept in repair on account of there being no heavy traffic on them. The residences of the Europeans are about a mile or so outside the town & stand back off the road amidst dense vegetation.

There are no verandahs around the houses or shops but some few of the latter have awnings put out over the footpath.

On Saturday our last day in port a mate and myself went around the harbour in a boat visiting several of the ships in harbour, all anchored out of course. Had a good look over a French packet boat the M.M. Cordilline bound for Cochin China. She carries a 75 mm as a stern chaser for submarines. Her passengers were a motely crowd comprising Indians, Chinese, French & some French soldiers on their way to Singapore.
