So far we are the only heavy horse battery that has come over the pass at Zummeran.
Oct 9th
Came to Haifa last night. Our guns are on coast defence just on the northern outskirts of the town until the proper 4.7" coast defence guns come up.
Just across the road from us & at the foot of Mt Carmel is our aerodrome which is extremely convenient for us. On the point of Mt Carmel range which ends fairly abruptly only a couple of hundred yards from the sea is a lighthouse, which is now being used by our O.P. [Observation Post] as a lookout for submarines.
The hill towers over the 'drome & is fairly steep. Running along the slope to the top is a made up road which has a fairly steep gradient. It takes about an hour to go to the top, walking. Near the Lighthouse is a monastery (German one) but the occupants are gone now.
The Bay of Haifa is a fairly deep one & Acre can be seen very distinctly across on the farther shore. Ships can lay in very close to the shore, but there is only one small stone pier for a landing place.
This morning there was a big hospital ship in which sailed with a full cargo during the day.
