9' thickness & composed of big blocks of stone about 4' x 2' x 2'. The ruins stand on a point of land & on either side is a small bay. This must have been a jolly fine place at one time.
Had two good swims yesterday & enjoyed it immensley. Also gave our ponies a swim. This is the first occassion this year that I have been in the sea.
Today we left again at 4 am & only travelled 5 miles & then camped. We are only 2 miles from Haifa but cannot go through in daylight on account of the congestion of traffic. We are leaving at about 3 am tomorrow as we must be through it by 5 am.
I think the real reason however is that they want us to go through unseeen by the inhabitants. Already a lot of spies have been caught in Haifa.
Our horses are in pretty bad condition as they are only on ½ rations or less. We have only lost 3 or 4 so far however which is good considering the conditions under which we have been walking.
By starting off at 4 am we can get most of the days journey done ere the sun gets very strong.
