Feb 19th

Left Moascar at 10.20 for Kantara. Left Kantara at 1 oclock in open truck for the regiment. Detrained at Bir El Abd where we camped for the night. This is a watering place on the railway 45 miles beyond Kantara.

Next afternoon got horses which were brought in from the regt which is camped at a place called Bayud 7 miles out from Ber El Abd. The first chap I met from the Regiment was a chap named Thorpe who was at Hawkesbury in '15. Joined the Regimental signallers & was put on HQS.

At Bayud we go out on observation posts about 7 miles out, every 2nd day. We communicate by Helio. All supplies are brought out on camels which are the principal means of transport on the Sand. The water is always carried in metal cans called Fanates (?), shaped like a suitcase & of various sizes, & to contain 10, 12 or 15 gallons.
