Our station when in action will be pitched about 100 - 200 yds to the rear of the guns. We have horses to ride & they are easily the two biggest crocks in the battery. One - mine, has a reputation as a buck jumper but when I got on him he did not do a thing.
This battery has just come from Salonika where they were for about 9 months. They have 4 guns, 60 pounders eaching weighing about 7 tons when ready for travelling & with an extreme range of 13,500 yds (Once however we by digging in the trail got as much as 14,500 yds on) but the gun was sticking up just like an anti air craft gun.
The guns are drawn by horses, a gun team consisting of 14 heavy draught horses but when we had been on the move sometimes these were reduced to 10 or 12.
In the group to which we are attached are 2 seige batteries of 6" Howitzers, 2 batteries of 60 pounders & a battery of 4.5" Howitzers.
