Went up to Zeitoun today on a Signalling Course. Zeitoun is about 8 miles out of Cairo & quite close to Heliopolis. Zeitoun is about 90 miles from Ismailia.
A few miles from Moasen we began to come into the cultivated areas, which are irrigated from the main fresh water canal which follows the line & from which branches go out in all directions.
Their methods of irrigation are very rough but never the less effective. To raise the water from the canal onto the land, generally a height of 3 - 4 feet, they use two or three methods.
One method is to have a long pole pivoted on a perpendicular pole about 10 feet long. The top pole is so balanced by means of a weight of dried mud or something heavy on the end that when the bucket suspended on the other end is pulled down by the native & filled
