The Cingalese are absolute pests & from childhood are taught to beg. Their favourite cry is "me no father no mother no sister no brother no nothing give it one penny".

The Barracks are fine, airy, & spacious buildings but almost empty when we were there. The Gardens on the outskirts of the town are very nice. The vegetation is all tropical & grows very dense.

Horses are exceedingly scarce being conspicuous by their absence. Practically all vehicles are drawn by a small species of humped oxen, which are exceedingly strong. The native carts are covered over with wickerwork & are usually drawn by either one or 2 oxen.

In the centre of the main sq is a tall square shaped tower used as a town clock & as a lighthouse. The roads in & around Colombo
