Indian ocean. Arrived Colombo at sundown on 7th & left on night of 10th. Went ashore each day at 11 am for a route march along the seafront & then to the barracks where we were dismissed at 1 pm. We were then at liberty to roam around the town until 4 pm when we went back to barracks & thence to the ship.

Had several rickshaw rides. They charge 1/- per hour which is not too much considering that in that time they can cover quite a lot of ground at a fair trot. The natives drawing them are very wiry & seem tireless.

Silk goods were very cheap here being obtainable at about 1/3[rd] the price one would pay in Australia. When buying anything you have to beat them do in price as their first price is about 3 times the real value of the article. As we did not like haggling over prices I think we paid a lot
