mansion. I had once been to Melbourne (8 year before) in the "Wyandra" an inter state coaster of 4,500 tones but of her I have only a faint recollection. We carried 1st & 2nd class passengers while the 3rd class part was reserved for troops. This had been converted into a troop deck extending from the fo'castle head to amidships, below the first saloon. A lot of the chaps had great difficulty in finding their way about down below but I did not have much trouble as I had been all over the ship prior to leaving Sydney. We had hammocks to sleep in with two blankets per man. In the day time these were rolled up & placed in receptacles for them in the corner of the mess deck. We drew our hammocks at 6 pm each night & put them away at 6 am each morning. Overhead on the roof were racks in which was a life belt
