& mess things etc & after tea we drew lots to see who would go ashore, ½ to go until 8pm & the remainder to go when they had returned: I drew the 2nd lot & had to wait until 8pm though some of the first half did not come back until next morning. Not for one moment did I doubt but that I would sail on the next day & sure enough when the troops marched on board at 10am on the 19th there was one man missing in our reinforcement the 21st of the 1st Regt. He was a Russian & had been taken by the police on a charge of assaulting a woman, & so I got his place to my great delight as it would have broken my heart I think to have had to stay behind having got so near to sailing. There were quite a lot of troops who came on board at Sydney including a reinforcement of the Camel Corps, a reinforcement of NZMR [New Zealand Mounted Rifles] (119). 2 reinforcements of Queenslanders
