but without success as it was too shallow near the banks & we did not have much time in which to explore it. Tomorrow afternoon we are going to spend in the town.

13th Oct

Spent the afternoon of yesterday in town but was disappointed with it. The lower part of the town near the water front & railway yards is very dirty & much the same as any other native place. The streets are narrow & when traffic goes through it has to go through one street & back by another as there is no room to pass.

The shops at present contain very little & in the markets one can obtain plenty of tomatoes fairly cheap, dried figs, pommegranits, water melons, eggs at 3 for 1/- & native bread. Everything is very dear, prices for the Military being much higher than for the civilian population.

The European or German & Jewish quarter is in higher ground at the rear of the town & is very nice & clean with plenty of trees about - almond & olive & the streets of this quarter are all planted with trees.
