this business. Shepherds from the British islands seldom remain Shepherds in this colony but look after other employment.
WAGES OF SHEPHERDS - WITHIN THE BOUNDARIES & IN THE INTERIOR DISTRICTS DURING THE YEAR 1847.
Under the range of within the boundaries Shepherds were paid with £18. & Watchmen at from £15 to £16 per annum
In New England this Year the wages of Shepherds varied in the different localities of that district from £20 to £25 per annum -
To remunerate the flock owner for these high wages they required at that time thirteen pence per pound for their wool in Sydney & one shilling & four pence in England, to meet the state of the labour market during the Year 1847 they required these prices for their washed wool -

SINGLE MEN -
For single men Shepherds per annum £20-0-0
For single men Watchmen alone, but bound to take a flock of sheep upon an emergency
£18-0-0
MARRIED MEN
For married men & wife, to shepherd on flock & watch two flocks £28-0-0
receiving two rations
For married men Son and Wife,letting a station with two flocks watching them £45-0-0
three rations -
