and left these marks upon the walls of its former limit. I may here state that I have never heard of any previous allusion having been made or of any notice or observation referring to these marks. I observed the evidences in the face of the Bulga range of mountains in the county of Northumberland in the year 1846. These distinct marked lines of the former Ocean upon the upright wall of the Bulga range are seen in the wall near to the Pass of the Bulga, and
drawings of these evidences may be best taken from the level country near to where the remarkable "Pyramid" which projects from that wall called by the country people of that district the 'Sentry Box". To science these evidences offer valuable, present for to these we are indebted for a correct gauge, these will inform us of the depth of the former Ocean which flowed upon the basom [?] of the Great Australian Desert and at what height the highest points in our Cordillera or great northern range then raised their heads above the former Pacific Ocean of these respective ages. Thus Benlomond [Ben Lomond] Mountain in New England in the thirtieth degree of South latitude, and in 151° 44'3" east longitude now correctly ascertained to e five thousand feet above the level of the present Pacific Ocean will have its height known at these distinct eras, and the surface of the Great Australian Desert and of the Continent have a correct gauge to guide the future scientific enquirer.
