MISCELLANEOUS NOTES -
POPULATION OF VICTORIA FROM THE CENSUS TAKEN IN APRIL 1854.
The population of this Colony from the Census taken in April 1854 amounted to two hundred & thirty two thousand eight hundred & seventy two persons -
Between the years 1851 & 1854 the population of the City of Melbourne more than double itself, & the population of the Colony of Victoria more than trebled itself.
IN 1851 Melbourne Contained 23, 141 inhabitants, in 1854 it contained 47,722 being an increase of 232,872 being an increase of 155,527 souls, or 200 per cent. The proportional increase of Geelong has been still greater than the of Melbourne, The population of Geelong in 1851 was 8,2991 in 1854 it had risen to 20,115 the increase being 11:824 or one hundred & thirty per cent.
FIRST CENSUS TAKEN OF THE COLONY, LIVE STOCK 1788 & 1801 LAND UNDER CULTIVATION IN 1801 -
FIRST CENSUS TAKEN OF NEW SOUTH WALES
In February 1788 the following census was taken of the Colony of New South Wales. Total population 1030 LIVE STOCK. This head of horned Cattle, and Seven horses and Mares -
JUNE 1801
At this date thirteen years after the foundation of the Colony, the live Stock had increased to
362 head of Cattle 211 Horses 6269 Sheep -
1259 Goats & 4766 hogs. Land under Cultivation in JUne 1801 Compressed 5,333 acres of wheat and 3864 acres of Maize -

Estimated population on 31st December 1854 -
253:151 Persons.
Estimated population of Sydney in November 1853 - was sixty thousand souls.
