STANDARD GOLD COIN OF GREAT BRITAIN.

The Standard gold coin of Great Britain is made of 27 [22?]  parts pure gold and two parts copper. From a pound Troy of standard gold are coined 46.725 sovereigns, so that the weight of each is 5 dwts. 3.274 grs.
This gives a mint price for the ounce of standard gold of £3.17.10½ d. nearly. Other authorities state that the market price of Standard gold has been, since 1840,  £3.17.9 d. without variation. But the Australian gold has, some of it, realised more than £4. on account of its unexampled purity.

Sixteen thousand sovereigns were delivered at the Mint to the Colonial Treasurer who transferred the same to a representative of the Bank of Australasia which institution had applied for the whole. The coin, as the machines get into perfect working order, will be a handsome one. The one side has a fac-simile of the imperial Sovereign's portraiture of her Majesty, with the words "Victoria D.G. Britanniar Regina F.D". The reverse side has the word "Australia" in the centre, encircled by the national wreath, with the Crown above.  Over the Crown are the words "Sydney Mint" beneath the words "One Sovereign"
