GOLD MINING IN CALIFORNIA
DAILY EARNINGS OF THE MINERS IN CALIFORNIA
1848 & 1849
Very particular & extensive enquires [enquiries] respecting the daily earnings & acquisitions of the miners, & from the estimates obtained of the results of the operations in the mines for 1848 & 1849 the opinion was that they averaged an ounce per day - & this was believed by many to be a low estimate, & by others that it approaches very near actual results -
The half of the season up to the 1st of September would give 65 working days & to each laborour [labourer] at 16 dollars per ounce 1040 dollars
These estimates give, as the result of the operation in the mines for 1848 &1849 the round sum of 40,000.000 dollars.
POPULATION OF CALIFORNIA
The population of California in December 1854 was calculated at Five Hundred & twenty thousand people
SITES FOR TOWNSHIPS IN THE MINING DISTRICTS
Commissioners are appointed to lay out sits for towns in Convenient Situations to the mines & to offer lots for sale, in order that those who make mining a permanent pursuit, may accumulate accumulate arround [around] them the comforts & enjoyments of Civilized life, & that those who desire to cultivate farm lots may be accommodated in the Californean [Californian] territory
