DISTRICT OF FITZ ROY.

The principal downs of this district were discovered by Sir Thomas Mitchell in 1846 and named by him in Complement to the present Governor General, The dispatches of Sir Thomas MItchell were published by His Excellency's Command on the 7th December 1846 for general information.
In alluding to the Country Sir Thomas States that
" To mark the epoch of this discovery I name it on my map The Fitz Roy Downs and the Range in the midst of it I distinguish as the Grafton Range"  Sir Thomas Mitchell places this isolated range in the centre of this "Splendid region" in longitude 149º2' east & in lat 26º 23' 32" South. Shortly after this discovery settlers began to occupy the district of Fitz Roy.  The aborigines were disposed to be troublesome with the early Settlers as had been the case with the first settlements in the Whole of the Northern interior, The efficient services performed by the Native Police, a force at that time newly organized, checked their inroads,  & under the efficient services performed by the body of men, the district was rendered comparatively quiet & orderly in a short time when compared to the other districts previously occupied.  Those settlers who were occupying new runs during the early settlement of this district reported favourably respecting the capabilities of the country, at this time this was desirable from the unfavourable reports of the Runs on the Mooki, Namoi & Gwyder rivers becomming [becoming?]
overstocked.
This new country  in the north, has opened up a good grazing country similarly situated in the west as Lower Condamine in Darling District is with the sea Coast of Moreton district.Fitzroy is situated to the west of Burnett and the sea Coast of Wide Bay & within the same distance of navigation as Lower Condamine is with Darling.
