PRESERVED MEAT IN TINS FROM GRAFTON

ON CLARENCE RIVER

Grafton on Clarence River is the most favourable situation for an Establishment for preserving meat in New South Wales, for this reason, the Cattle from the most favoured Northern districts can be sent there with easy travel, the whole line being well watered and grassed to the township - The Cattle from the grazing districts would lose but a comparatively small percentage in Condition Compared to the lines at present in use - I have in my observations on these lines given my Calculation on the loss of Condition  & fatness in my other writings, and I now give it as my decided opinion that Grafton is the most fitting Situation to have a boiling establishment of this description for New South Wales.
From Grafton, the best article could be supplied
in tins secured and stamped by a Government officer, for the supply of her Majesties [Majesty's]
Army & Navy. The Northern Districts can at every season afford an unlimited supply, & from this quarter the Southern Colony of Victoria are this year 1854 being provided
Grafton is distant from Armadale in New England the 'Evergreen Country of the North" one hundred & thirty miles, and from Tenterfield one hundred & thirty miles, Clarence district is celebrated as a Cattle Country, the Cattle from the Richmond river being considered the best Stock in the Country.  From Grafton to Sydney by water is three hundred & fifty miles.

EXPORTS FROM WIDE BAY 1885.

The exports of last year from Wide Bay as compiled from the Moreton Bay papers was £80,000;  considerable increase may be looked for in the present one, and as tallow has been shipped already to the amount of £12.000 I am fully justified in stating that the exports for the year will exceed £100,000.  As regards the imports to Wide Bay, there is no reliable source to derive information from; but as there are five vessels of the average of 120 tons constantly in the trade, there is no doubt but the figures, if they could be procured, would be large.
