IMPROVING THE BREED OF SHEEP
Previous to the year 1852 no Sheep of the Cheviot breed were introduced into the flocks of New South Wales — These Sheep are a low Set & hardy breed, the wool is good, & they have a Close Staple upon them. The oldest Stockholders prefer the long Staple, Sound in fibre, fine & Close on the back of the animal, this they Consider best Suited for the London Market — The Cold Climates produce a Sound & Valuable wool more So than that produced in a hot Climate — It is a Matter of remark that the Coarsest breed of Leicester Sheep run fine after a few years grazing in New England. Well bred & fine woolled Colonial rams were Sold in New England in 1852 at from20/ to 30/ a head, good Sound Colonial bred ewes at from five to Six Shillings a head.
