MISCELLANEOUS NOTES.

Sheep get diseased at sea from the sudden transition from nutritive pasture, from ill  treatment and a long voyage.
There is an officer appointed to inspect imported sheep in Sydney, he is authorized to examine such sheep, and if found to be diseased to cause them to be distroyed.[destroyed]. An additional security to the flockmaster would be in the mean time, to dress every imported sheep as it arrives on the station, & this ought to be observed, that either in purchasing or exchanging Rams from one station to another, that the Sheep receive a
proper dressing previous to being mixed with the flocks -
By curing this disease by the application of Mercury not only the acari but their eggs must be destroyed. Eggs deported [?] in a few days turn out a swarm of fresh insects to spread the disease & thus when once a flock becomes infested with Scab, its eradication is only to be affected by prompt & continuous attention & the ointment used to be made of two strengths - That for bad cases should consist of a common mercurial or troopers ointment, rubbed down with three times its weight of lard.  The others for ordinary purposes, should contain five parts of lard to one of mercurial ointment. The operator beginning with the head rubbing a little of the ointment well into it. A Shred or furrow should then be made from the head to the tail in such a manner that the skin is exposed a little ointment should then be applied with the fingers to the skin along the whole of the exposed surface. Another furrow should be drawn on either side & in this way over the whole sheep the furrows not being more than four inches apart. The quantity of ointment applied to each may vary from a few drahms [drams] to two ounces one third of the quantity being used for a lamb.
