This monument is erected near to the Heads of Botany Bay and was erected as the inscription informs us in 1825 by the French officers M.M. Bougainville & Ducampier, to the memory of the unfortunate La Perouse and his companions. It consists of a simple column standing within a Small enclosure of Stone work, the Summit is Surmounted by a globe.

On the 24th of January 1788 the two French Ships Boussoli and Astrolabe, under the command of the celebrated La Perouse, entered Botany Bay. They remained nearly two months [indecipherable], and mutual interchange of civilities took place between the officers of the Britisk Squadron, and those of the lamented La Perouse whose fate So long interested the inhabitants of Europe. Some remains of the expedition under La Perouse were discovered in 1828 on the Maniveto Island, Situated to the northward & eastward of Port Jackson, both Vessels having been wrecked on a Coral reef near to these Islands. The survivours never reached a civilized land.
