The machinery on the old diggings is more extensively used on the auriferous quartz lodes, the use of powerful crushers of Berdans & other patents, some of which have been taken out by inventors in the Colony. In the neighbourhood of Castlemaine alone, it was lately ascertained there more no less than two hundred puzzling [?] machines -- Quartz crushing is beginning
to be carried on with great activity at Bendigo & Ballarat. At Ballarat also, machinery is extensively used for pumping water from the deep levels, which, in some cases,are upwards of two hundred feet from the surface.
